Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) is one of the densest and most durable hardwoods in the world. For Miami’s unique climate, it is unmatched. It naturally resists rot, decay, termites, and fungal growth. Unlike softer woods or some composite materials, Ipe can withstand South Florida's intense heat, heavy tropical rains, and coastal salt air without warping, cracking, or splintering.
Exceptionally well. Because of its extreme density and natural oils, Ipe absorbs very little moisture, which prevents the cupping and twisting common in other decking materials under high humidity. While the intense Miami sun will naturally bleach any wood over time, Ipe’s structural integrity remains completely unaffected.
You have two options depending on the look you want:
  • To retain its rich brown color: Apply a UV-blocking hardwood oil (such as Ipe Oil) once a year.
  • For a low-maintenance approach: Leave it untreated. Over time, the sun will gracefully weather the wood into a beautiful, silver-gray patina. Regardless of your choice, periodic washing with soap and water to remove dirt and leaves is all the maintenance it needs.
An Ipe deck can easily last 40 to 50+ years in South Florida’s harsh environment, even without chemical treatments. It is a true lifetime investment that often outlasts the very structures it is attached to, significantly increasing your property’s resale value.
Because Ipe is literally as hard as steel (it has a Janka hardness rating of 3,680 lbf), it requires specific installation techniques. You cannot use standard woodworking tools. Contractors must use carbide-tipped saw blades and pre-drill all holes before fastening. We highly recommend using hidden fastening systems for a flawless, premium finish and ensuring proper ventilation underneath the deck to allow Miami's moisture to escape.
Ipe has a higher upfront cost than pressure-treated wood and sits in a comparable price tier to premium composite decking. However, it offers a much better long-term ROI. Unlike composites, Ipe does not warp, crack, or trap heat—meaning it stays much cooler under the Miami sun, making it barefoot-friendly. Since it lasts twice as long as most composites, it is the most cost-effective choice over time.
Yes. Ipe is so dense that termites and other wood-boring insects cannot chew through it. Additionally, Ipe carries a Class A fire rating, which is the same rating given to concrete and steel. This makes it highly resistant to flame spread, providing extra peace of mind in our hot climate.
We responsibly source all of our premium Ipe from sustainably managed forests in South America that strictly comply with IBAMA and Lacey Act regulations. We offer reliable, direct-to-site delivery for both contractors and homeowners across Miami-Dade County and surrounding South Florida areas.
